Important GDPR Information

On May 25th, 2018 a new piece of legislature will go into effect for users from countries who are members of the European Union.

As you know, connecting to DigiWorldz, or any other OpenSim grid requires an exchange of data between your viewer and our servers. Some of this data contains information which the GDP regulation deems as “Personally Identifiable” information such as your ip address, your user name, your mac address, and your email address and password if you are a local user. If you are a paying customer of DigiWorldz, we also ask for Real Life billing information which is all considered “Personally Identifiable” information in this new regulation and as such, we are forced to specifically obtain your permission to collect this data, store this data, and use this data in the ways we describe in our Privacy Policy and our Terms of Service.

Currently, we are only required to do this for users from the EU countries, but there is belief this requirement will soon become standard in most countries and it is not feasible to run 2 different systems, one for countries in the EU, and another for those who aren’t, therefore we are putting this requirement in place for all users so if, in the future it becomes a requirement for other countries, we’ll already be in good shape.

Each type of user, local and hypergrid avatars will have to provide permission for us to collect, store, and use their data.
Existing, locally registered users of DigiWorldz will have a specific page to provide permission, and we’ll have a separate page for HyperGrid users to utilize.

It is VERY important to note!!!
Since our services rely on some of this data in order to function, Starting on May 25th, 2018 no user will be able to login to DigiWorldz unless they have provided us with permission… this means your avatars will be disabled and will be deleted a short time later if permission is not provided.
Both local avatars and HyperGrid visitors to DigiWorldz will have to provide permission, otherwise they won’t be permitted to login/connect to our services.

The good news is this, once you provide permission for your local or HyperGrid avatar, we won’t ask for it again.
Providing your permission is only for a specific avatar, one avatar’s permission doesn’t cover any “alts”.. if you have more than one avatar, each of them will have to provide permission.

I know it’s a pain, it’s been a pain for me to get us ready to be compliant, but the penalties for not being compliant are just too steep and all businesses, clubs, organizations, etc.. basically, anyone who collects and stores data, no matter how big or small, has to do this or they can be sued. Fines of up to 20 million euros or 4% of the total worldwide annual turnover of the preceding financial year, whichever is higher.  That’s right, whichever is higher… in our case that would be 20 million Euros, which we don’t have.

As you can see, it is very important that we are compliant in this as a single, small, mistake will put us under.
Some grids I’ve talked to have said they will simply block all users from EU member countries, while others think the regulators won’t bother the small people like us, but it is my belief we cannot afford to gamble on this as there is simply too much at stake.

Now that I’ve completely ruined your day, it is very important for you to provide this permission as not providing it will cause you to lose the ability to use our services and will eventually lead to your avatar being deleted. We’ve tried to make this as easy as we can and still be compliant.

All “Local” DigiWorldz avatars created before May 25th, 2018 will have to provide this permission.
(All “Local” DigiWorldz avatars created on or after May 25th, 2018 will not have to do this.)

All HyperGrid visitors will have to provide this permission.
